PvP rules: Deshret
Where players can fight each other, who can attack whom, and what you lose when you die.
The ancient Egyptians split their world in two: Kemet, the black, fertile land of the Nile, and Deshret, the red desert of the god Set. Scarab Online does the same.
Where
- Kemet is safe. The Nile valley, its cities and towns, and the oases of the Western Desert are safe ground: no player can attack you there.
- Deshret is everything beyond the valley cliffs. The sand turns red, it's the hatched area on the world map, and other players get an Attack option when you right-click them. Type
::posin chat to see the danger level where you stand. - The danger level rises the further you go from the river, up to the forties in the deepest desert. So do the rewards: meteorite iron, bandit camps and Serket, Queen of Scorpions's nest are all out there.
Who can attack whom
- Both of you have to be in Deshret.
- How far apart in might you can be grows with the danger level, counting whichever of you stands in the safer spot. Right-click a player to see how they measure up to you, from "harmless" to "deadly".
- Party members can't attack each other.
- Most of the desert is single combat: if someone is already fighting a player, you can't join in. Boss lairs are multi-combat.
- Teleport spells fail beyond danger level 20, so deep in the desert you'll have to walk out.
The Mark of Set
Strike a player who hasn't struck you in the last 20 minutes and the Mark of Set is on you, shown above your head, for 20 minutes. It also weighs on your heart: your Ma'at drops by 10, and killing while marked drops it further. Fighting back against someone who struck first doesn't mark you.
Death: the Weighing of the Heart
Every player carries Ma'at, from -100 to 100. Completing quests and offering bones at shrines lighten your heart; the Mark of Set weighs it down. When you die, Anubis weighs your heart against the feather of Ma'at:
| Where you die | What you keep |
|---|---|
| Kemet (safe) | Everything. A heavy heart only leaves your ka weakened (-10% accuracy and guard) for a few minutes. |
| Deshret, light heart (Ma'at 0 or more) | Your 3 most valuable items, plus one more for every 25 Ma'at. |
| Deshret, heavy heart | Your most valuable item. |
| Deshret, under the Mark of Set | Nothing. Ammit devours what you carried. |
- A
Golden scarab in your satchel speaks for you: it is spent, your heart is judged light, and you keep 4 more items.
- Stacks (deben, arrows, glyph tablets) never count as kept items, so don't carry your fortune into the desert.
- If a player killed you, they see your dropped items first, for about a minute; then anyone can take them. If the desert killed you, what you lost is sealed in a canopic cache where you fell, and only you can open it for 15 minutes.
- You rise at the shrine your ka is bound to. Pray at any shrine to bind it there.
