Scarab Online

The story so far

The dying sun, the foundling of Reedmarsh, and what has happened since. Spoilers for the released quests.

The dying sun

Every night the sun god Ra sails his barque through the Duat, the land of the dead, and every night the serpent Apep, chaos itself, tries to swallow it. Every dawn, Ra wins.

Lately he has been winning by less. Pharaoh is dead and his heir vanished the same night. Since then the sun rises a little later each morning, and eclipses come without warning. People in the streets of Memphis complain about the price of bread; the priests of Ra say nothing at all, which is worse.

The foundling

Years ago, Hapu, a fisherman of Reedmarsh in the Delta, found a baby floating in a reed basket among the papyrus. Around its neck was a scarab amulet: Khepri, the beetle who rolls the sun into the sky each dawn, carved with glyphs that no hand in Egypt made. Hapu and his wife Meryt raised the child as their own. That child is you.

Spoilers below, quest by quest.

Born of the Reeds

Old Tiye, a retired priestess of Isis, finally reads your amulet: One of seven. When the seventh hour of night is swallowed, the barque of Ra will not rise. The sun is dying, and you carry a piece of it. She sends you to Memphis with a warning: trust no one who wears the red of Set. Hapu gives you a letter for Vizier Ptahhotep, the Pharaoh's right hand and, since the king's death, perhaps both hands.

A Stranger in Men-nefer

The vizier is very interested in your amulet. He sends you south to the ruins of Akhetaten, the heretic's city, where cultists of Set have been gathering. Before they die they speak of a master in the white walls, and Memphis is called the White Walls. The vizier dismisses it as the ravings of madmen, seems oddly unsurprised, and hands you over to Captain Nehesy of the Medjay, the desert wardens. The vizier's secrets will have to wait.

The Silent Sphinx

On the Giza plateau, the Great Sphinx speaks only to those the gods have marked, and it has three questions for you. Answer true and it gives you a riddle-stone, and a promise: When the seventh hour of night comes, remember who gave it to you.

Thieves of the Place of Truth

In the Valley of the Kings, someone is breaking the necropolis seals. Sergeant Nebamun sends you into the Tomb of Amenmesse, where you find a robbers' tally of names, tombs and shares of the gold. The biggest share belongs to Paneb, foreman of the very builders who cut the tombs. Nebamun gives you the necropolis seal: every tomb in the valley is open to you now, if your hands are steady enough.

To be continued

Seven scarabs, seven hours of daylight, a vizier who is never surprised, and a cult of Set that knows more than it should. The story continues with future updates; news is posted on the forums.
